7.75 out of 10.
Castillo's film about forbidden love was way ahead of its time in tackling the controversial and sensitive topics of incest and abortion. Nanette (Santos) and Rod (De Leon) are first cousins who fall in love and are determined to keep their union intact against all odds. Santos as the aggressive Nanette who is head over heels for Rod delivers a very effective and believable performance that you would want to shake some sense to her stubborn and irrational mind. De Leon is equally powerful as Rod who intially tries to fight off his taboo feelings but eventually succumbs to it. The supporting players, especially Garcia and Villanueva as Nanette's parents, are terrific. The script is generally perceptive with a dose of cheesy dialogue and overuse of voice overs. There are issues with continuity and editing as the length of De Leon's hair varied from scene to scene. The film could have used some trimming in running time. There are lots of repetitive sequences of the protagonists playing in the rain or cavorting on the beach ala Deborah Kerr and Burt Lancaster in From Here to Eternity while wearing denims! Levi Celerio's song, Yan Ba'y Kasalanan (Is It a Sin?), is well utilized in enhancing the emotions and mood of the characters. The movie marks the first screen pairing of Santos and De Leon who were both on the cusp of being hailed as top dramatic actors of their generation. It is fascinating to see how some movie locations looked in the mid-'70s and how the cost of dormitory rent (P200/month) is now only equivalent to a cup of fancy coffee. The chase at the end of the picture is possibly one of the most memorable sequences ever recorded in Philippine cinema.
