*STORY TIME* Many   #cultures   demonise hyenas, the Hararis, inhabitants of an   #ancient   walled   #city     #south   of the Chercher   #Mountains   in   #eastern     #Ethiopia   , are at peace with them.   #Oral     #history   reveals that this truce began   #centuries   ago during a time of great famine when hungry hyenas attacked and ate the citizens, so the town’s   #leaders   convened a meeting and declared that they would feed the hyenas to stop their attacks. This was the start of a unique, mystical and symbiotic interspecies   #relationship   with the city leaders even building low openings in the walls to allow the hyenas to come and go freely. In the 1960s, a   #farmer   started feeding hyenas scraps of meat to keep them away from his livestock. That farmer was the first   #hyenaman   Today the title belongs to Yusuf Mume Saleh. About   #thirty   years ago, Yusuf noticed a lone hyena hanging around in the evenings as he fed his   #dog   . Unafraid, one night he threw some meat on the ground nearby to see what would happen. Snatching it up quickly, the hyena ran off, returning again the next   #night   until this shared   #ritual   became a   #regular   occurrence, with the hyena eventually bringing   #members   from   #her     #clan   along to feed as well.   #africa     #african     #learn     #repost     @elders  .and.ancestors
